You know those moments when you are with someone you love and you close your eyes to be even more "present" with them?

This is a peek of Part II of this busy family's session...

I have had the pleasure of taking this family's photographs several times over the past couple of years.

Photos are important to them.

It is a big part of their home.

Their story can be found in canvases and framed photos...events and moments on their walls and tables and desks and bureaus.

Dad has been deployed twice and photos have been a touchstone.

Their story now includes a lovely young woman who travelled from Germany well over a year and a half ago to become an aupair -she moved into a house and eventually found herself another home.

And her image is now woven into the fabric of this loving family...

Shannon and Tom, thank you for extending to me the privilege of helping you document your unique family story these past couple of years.

I wish you all the best as you embark on the next leg of your journey in Europe.

You all hold such a special place in my heart.

Sometimes, even though you are model-gorgeous, you do not want to pose for a photo.

Oh, especially when you are in an awesome park and there are swings to be swung and slides to be slid.

So it was on Sunday, when I met with a certain handsome young man and his mother and sister. He thought he wanted nothing to do with me and my camera...

You know what I say?

There are swings to be swung...

And slides to be slid....

And laughs to be had...

And smiles to be given...

And love to be shared...

As long as we are together...

It's ALL good.

Tammy, your children are terrific. They are smart and independent and, yes, very sweet. And you, you my lady, are more beautiful than you know.

This young man and I met when he was a newborn.

This year marks the third time that I have had the honor of taking his photos.

These lashes and dimples have captivated me from the get go...

We explored the paths behind his home this time, and true to "little boy form" it was filled with many activities.

First up - tee ball...

Next , gathering sticks...

The sticks soon became intstuments.

A trumpet...

A flute...

We had a ball :-)...

I don't think I'll ever grow tired of taking this handsome boy's photograph...

Leslie and Geoff, your boy is a delight - and it's no wonder, given the house full of love that you provide.

I just ran outside and laid under the trees in my backyard trying to catch pictures of the leaves as they fell to the ground. I debated with myself for a minute because I had this post to write, but then I grabbed my camera and seized the moment.

Speaking of seizing the moment (not so subtle segue) - this past weekend, I headed up to Arlington to spend some time with a very energetic toddler - pretty much a redundancy of words right?

She was all "hitched-up legs" running - very excited to be out in the fresh fall air...

We did get her to settle under a gorgeous HUGE old tree...

But there are interesting things everywhere...

The session ended at the playground nearby...

And it doesn't get more joyous than this...

Kate and Todd, it was really great to see you again and to witness the growth of your amazing girl. Loved it all - from her sweet outfit to her blond curls and her fiery spirit.

There are a few more to share with you, and I can't wait for you to see them.

Right outside my office window is a glorious sight.

Incredibly tall trees with yellow, orange and red hues.

It also means that the yard will be covered with tons of leaves to be raked in the next couple of weeks. Fotunately, while I do a lot around this house, that particular job does belong to my husband - soooo I'm just gonna enjoy. :-)

A little over a week ago, I met this family at their community lake to take their annual family photos.

The youngest of them had me on my toes and in constant motion...

When I asked him to pose for me - here's what I got (he literally had to hold himself still...I LOVE it!)

Big sister gave me a bit of a break (thank you)...

Mom and Dad too...(aren't they a hot couple?)

I think they each got their "mini-me's"...

And last but not least, brother and sister together...

And while the photo above is adorable, I believe this may be the true nature of their relationship right now :-)...

Amy and Scott, you are both so terrific and so are your kids . Can't wait to share the rest of the session with you.

I first met Mark and Laura when Mark and I were doing Romeo and Juliet at the Orlando Shakespeare Festival - which is set in Verona - and I travelled to Verona, NJ for this photo session...

Ok. I'm a dork. :-)

We had been trying to schedule this session for the past year and a half!

Laura and Mark are two incredibly busy people (click on their names to find out more about what they do - cuz I think it's cool - and click here to see Mark's latest project) and they have three incredibly busy children.

Combine that with my schedule and you have...well - a year and a half...

They have one of those homes in which you instantly feel comfortable. Always a credit to the people living in it. (Not to mention a "to die for" kitchen complete with a lonnnnng kitchen counter that you can belly on up to. Oh man, I want a kitchen like that ;-)

We took a photo on their front stoop and then they took me to a nearby park that was designed by the same fella who designed Central Park...pretty cool.

It was a great setting, a glorious day, we had beautiful late afternoon light and here is some of what we did together...

Their oldest is a musician, an actor and a good sport considering there was a friend waiting ...

The two youngest are twins.

The youngest boy is such a "light", kind and creative...

The youngest girl is also a thespian, soccer player and I believe she could have kept on a-modelin' until we ran out of light...

I really loved getting to experience the different dynamics of their close relationships...

Apparently, they MUST (I was informed by the twins), simply MUST do at least one silly shot.

A bunch of wonderful photogenic goofs...

Did I mention photogenic?

Laura and Mark, although I felt like our time was all too brief - I loved getting to hang, if only for a while, with you.

Of course you have.

When I was acting and running mostly in those circles, I heard "it" all the time.

I've even seen, met and known some people who I think have "it".

And now I have a +1 for that list.

Here she is....

Last June I donated my services for an auction for the Marble Hill School, and this girl's parents were the highest bidders for a session with me.

Lucky me.

I got to spend a lovely fall morning walking a neighborhood park with this family...

Even Cooper "The Awesome-Wonder-Dog" got his "model" on...

We took photos until this little one could go no longer. I mean, being a super model takes hard work - although she makes it look easy...

Jen and Mike, it was a pleasure to meet you. Thank you for supporting a great school and for entrusting your bid with me. I'm so glad I had this opportunity to help you capture this time in your sweet girl's life.

I have this written on one of those awesome square cards and pinned to a bulletin board (my tangible pinterest) in my office, and as I sip my coffee this morning waiting for the caffeine to spark - well... anything please - I'm staring at that card waiting for inspiration to osmos (is that even a word?) into me - and TOTALLY ignoring the message right in front of me.

But this is also what I'm looking at...

I was away for a week and had to jump into two more days of work when I returned - and I'm not kvetching here, well - yeah I am, but ANYWAY...my office is just the tippy-top of the rest of the house. My suitcases have 'sploded on my bedroom floor. For some reason I also decided I needed to change out spring/summer clothes for fall/winter without even unpacking yet - so those containers from the basement are also 'sploded on the floor, the contents of the boxes with Halloween stuff have 'sploded on the basement floor - I could go on and on around each room of the house - but you get the idea...

For some reason, my home often outwardly reflects what is going on inside of me...and right now there is a lot going on and the many facets are overlapping.

Last week I had a lovely conversation with MeRa Koh about balance. I won't go into the specifics of what she said because those beautiful ideas belong to her and I'm certain she will share them (click on her name to check her out - she is an amazing artist/teacher/person with a special heart for women - seriously, check her out).

The gist of it was that balance is possible even in the midst of many "pulls".

It's not THAT daunting, right?...I mean, I've been here before.

If I tackle one thing at a time, eventually it will all get done.

So first, Happy Halloween.

Last night I put tiny braids in my daughter's hair so that she could have and ultra-cool-volumizing -hair-do in which to perch her cat ears when those braids were taken out. She is 8, and a full-on fashionista. I'm already anticipating the encouragement it is going to take for her to put a jacket on over her kitty fabulousness tonight...

Speaking of fabulousness - I recently went out to Roosevelt Island to take photographs of three gorgeous young ladies and their parents.

This is another family that has continued to bring me back.

Lucky me.

Pippa is pure light, with an lively gait and personality...

Cara is a gal with an artists eye, who loves to explore and express herself...

And Maggie is a fashionista in her own right, an observant and lovely girl...

I am a little behind in my blogging.

Fall blew in, and swept me up into a whirlwind.

All good stuff. Fun stuff. Busy stuff.

Then last week, I was in New York City for a few photo sessions and the WPPI/PDN industry conference and expo. I met some great artists, gleaned some new bits of technology and inspiration, and finally - put my hands on some amazing products that I will be rolling out at the end of this year.

I brought my iPad with me to catch up on blogging - and I'm a little embarressed to admit that I couldn't figure out how to make it do what I needed it to do in order to do what I needed to get it done...got it?

I'll add learning that that to the ever-revolving-and-evolving "to do list". :-)

But, I digress...

This session is from a couple of weeks ago. Honey and Tex were in town (aka Grandma and Grandpa) and I went over to take a few pictures while they were visiting. I love this family. I have the priviledge of photographing them often. This is actually Part I - you will see more of them in the next few weeks.

What follows are a few peeks from their first session.

Now these are some good lookin' people and I love these images - but I gotta brag and say that they are not the most awesomest ones...I had to hold those back because they are going to be gifts. :-)

Yesterday, I got to spend time with this fabulous family -

A wonderful man in the midst of a literal house full of women, greeted me at the door while the ladies were finishing up getting ready. His wife soon joined us - making sure I was welcomed and gathering the rest of the crew - she is also, for lack of a better word...well - wonderful.

It had been quite a while since she had a portrait of herself and her lovely twin daughters taken. (I believe she said they were three the last time). Here she is with her grown-up babies...

Polite, engaging and completely genuine - ALL of the young ladies of this family had me at "hello" -

Did I mention they were fun?

Last Friday evening, I met Kristina in Occoquan for her senior photo session. This young lady has a wonderful sweetness about her and a quiet intensity. She has a passion for the arts, for skating and for nature. She's a lovely girl...

I really enjoy senior photo sessions. It's a big year for them. They are on the precipice of so much change and they are just full of possibilities. Awesome.

Towards the end of the session, we were beginning to lose light, but I think it makes for a pretty cool shot. That, and my model rocks. :-)

In this current world, most of us have our extended families scattered (some are literally across the world) - so it was a distinct pleasure for me to meet with three generations of this family and photograph them at the Meadowlark Botanical Gardens this past weekend.

They were clearly a close group, who enjoyed each other's company. Collectively easy going, ready with a laugh and bound with a common purpose - they worked together with me for nearly two hours on a warm summer morning, and they made my job so much easier.

This past Saturday, I headed into Occoquan to photograph four young dancers and their brother.

I love dancers. I love to watch them create, rehearse and perform. It makes me wish I had stuck with taking lessons - so I could jump right in and do all the things I see on So You Think You Can Dance (oh yeah, I am a huge fan). So you can imagine how excited I was to have the opportunity to play with and photograph these young ladies (and their adorable brother).

sweet days of summer

It's been a great summer of recitals, family, friends, lessons, pool, nyc, home projects, etc. - a time to recharge and refuel for the coming school year and busy portrait seasons.

My father was in the Air Force when I was growing up and we moved every two years of my life. Summer was often a time for regrouping because we were moving to a new place. Fall meant meeting new people, learning new things and making new friends and quite literally - a fresh start. So Fall, even more than the new year, is when I feel that surge of energy and enthusiasm that accompany new beginnings...even now.

But I digress, a little...here are some of my favorite images from this summer...

School supplies are ready and waiting in a bag to be taken in the first day of school. The phone is ringing and sessions are booking. I'm anticipating learning new things, meeting new people and making new friends.

Tuesday evening I met a wonderful family, who withstood this heat, for a photo session. The reason being that their oldest will be leaving very soon for two years to serve missions. Even the pup seemed to understand the importance of capturing a family photo - staying put. I believe I may have actually offended him when I attempted to call him out of the photo. :-)

They are a great family, with such varied and cool personalities. Loved listening to their banter and their teasing of one another.

One of the greatest perks of my job is getting to meet fabulous people and learning about their families. This dad has a brother-in-law who is an extraordinary artist creating brilliant pieces with existing photographs...read more about that at the end of this post.

Last weekend I went to photograph a young man who I have had the pleasure of photographing as a newborn, at Christmas time last year and now at a little over one year. They change so much in such a short span of time and it is really cool to be let in on the witnessing of that change and then capturing it.

Christian is an easy going and gentle soul. He has intelligent, laughing eyes and I'm told he makes friends wherever he goes. I don't doubt that.

His mama kept talking about how much she loved his little feet - so I had to...

This family really is one of the sweetest - and the relationship between dad and son is quite special...

In addition to taking photographs, I teach three drama classes during the school year. Two of the classes are 3 - 6 year olds and one is 7 - 12 year olds. This past week, my classes had their final performances in front of family and friends. They performed interpretations of "The Little Engine That Could" and "Charlotte's Web".

Teaching was not something I sought out - it was an opportunity that came to me - and I'm so glad I was smart enough to embrace it.

I'll be honest, there can be a lot of challenges with a room full of energetic and excited kids, but the rewards all around are bountiful.

Just a few for the kids...

they discover, in their largely technological world, that ordinary objects like a wooden spoon can become any number of things with creativity
they become better audience members
they learn some of the "language" of acting - and then teach their parents :-)
some of them move from timidity in front of people into self confidence in expressing themselves
some of them find moments of focus in their excitement - sometimes even more than moments

Mostly, I am grateful for what I learn when I remember to open myself up to listening to them...

it is important to take breaks and let off steam
work can be fun and playful and doesn't need to be perfect
spontaneous creativity can be genius
sometimes you have to express the unedited thought

I really could go on and on...

I'm so proud of ALL my students for their courage and willingness to learn new things - and while I'm happy to have a break this summer from teaching - I'm already looking forward to the fall!

A few months back - well more than a few months now - Me Ra Koh posted a photography exercise on the Soar blog for a self portrait and a photograph of something that represented where you were at this point in your journey.

While I knew what represented me, I wasn't sure of it's exact meaning at the time. Here is what I chose...

I feel certain that I am on the correct path, but I also feel as if I am standing at a point of divergence. It is not just important, but imperative, that I now make mindful choices and decisions. I have come to the realization that while I have specific instances in my past of setting clear intentions and seeing results, I have spent so very much of my life simply "reacting" to the world around me.

Listen, I get it, you have to be flexible in your life - you have to receive feedback of all kinds and respond and move accordingly, but having your own clear intentions allows you to do that within a framework that works uniquely for you.

I am compelled to move my life, my relationships, my work and my artistry to the next level. I can't tell you what exactly has prompted this in me - perhaps an accumulation of beginning to approach a "mid-point", still striving for fulfillment or maybe the earth literally being thrown off it's axis? :-)... who knows.

I throw this out into this stratesphere of technology for connection and accountability.

I have spent the past couple of years gathering information from a number of teachers and sources and it's time to start down the path of my own making and create clear visions of where I want to go - knowing that those visions will morph and grow as I do - defining what success means for me and finding peace and prosperity in that.

It's exciting and it will make all the difference.

I was so honored when my dear friend, Christine Barker (who is also a fellow photog) asked if I would come up to Baltimore to take family photos this past week.

Christine has a genuine entrepreneurial spirit and it is accompanied by a huge heart for including and helping other people - I just love this gal. Her husband, Cary, is mega-smart, a good conversationalist and one of those great hands-on dads. And then there is Liam - ohhh what a great kid he is - full of imagination, curiosity and energy that often just radiates from his little body. Her father and brother were also in town visiting from out West and I had a lovely time meeting and talking with them.

Last Friday, I had the pleasure and the honor of observing at an amazing workshop - Listen Beyond Words. I was there to take photographs of the workshop and do some portraiture of one of the workshop's leaders, Diane Hunter. Diane partnered with Koelle Simpson on this workshop and I can truly say that even the experience of witnessing this work is transforming - I can only imagine what the visceral experience of participation must have been. I am determined to find out for myself at my next opportunity.

This particular workshop was focused around the issues of parenting, but the nature of this work with the horses throws a much wider net and encourages you to make instant adjustments that will result in a much more centered and clarified self. I understand why some have described this work as "magical", but there are no smoke and mirrors, you can see and experience the practical applications immediately if you are willing.

I have always believed that words were powerful tools but, of late, the lessons that are coming to me include the extreme power of intention and action and of opening myself up to see and receive feedback from all aspects of my life...and then take that glorious leap of faith.

Over the weekend, I met three very lovely ladies. Mom, Teresa, and her girls, Emma and Lilly. They chose Mason Neck State Park near Lorton for the location of their session. It's a beautiful park, if you haven't been there, with walkways near the water and through the woods. It was a great place to explore.

Teresa is highly intelligent and personable and I loved watching her interact with her daughters. Emma is a natural model, does not mind the camera one bit and knows exactly what to do in front of it and Lilly, has a light about her that comes through in her smile and playfulness.

When you are a mom who works both for your home and for someone else, you may find yourself in the position of having to place the care of your child in the hands of someone else for a portion of the workday. The leap of faith that this requires is pretty huge, and when you are fortunate to find someone that you and your children adore...that is a gift. I was lucky enough to place my daughter in the arms of some amazing daycare workers when she was a pre-schooler and I was extremely grateful for them.

Last week, I took photos of a young woman named Caro. She is an au pair from Germany who has become an integral part of one of my dear friend's family this year. Smart and funny and kind - she's pretty (as you will see below), but she is also quite, quite beautiful.

I had a mom contact me recently to take a photo of her three grown children. The youngest was going to be in town for a visit and she hadn't had them all together in quite a while. This session was going to be her early Mother's Day gift/birthday present to herself (an inspired idea - by the way). Needless to say, I had no idea how the three grown ones were going to feel about the whole thing.

What I found out, within minutes, was that I was going to have a blast photographing these people. They were open and friendly from the get go and obviously comfortable with each other and themselves. Lots of laughter and fun. I grew up in a home where "teasing" was part of our love language...and I felt right at home with this crew.

We had an audience during part of our session - a few of the kids who are still at home - and I couldn't help turning around and taking their photo...

So, I'm getting ready to take a photo of the lovely Lilly this past weekend, and she says to me - "I don't have to smile, right?". "That's right", I tell her. "Unless you want to."... and sometimes she did, smile, and sometimes she didn't, and sometimes she tried and all of it was okay with me. Really, she was asking if she could be herself for the photos- and that is absolutely what I wanted from her - after all, she's fabulous at it.

Rebecca, the oldest, had a wall filled with photos of all the people who mean something to her - and it's her favorite thing in her room. Talk about a girl after my own heart.

Jeff and Kari have wonderful children and it's a great family. They have one of those homes that you feel like you can kick your shoes off at the front door and curl your feet up under yourself on the sofa and enjoy a day of just hanging out with good people. Lilly says her family "chillaxes" and it is one her favorite things to do.

Well, I don't think I ever made my brother laugh so hard that food came out his nose, but I did make him laugh so hard that he couldn't stand up. He and my mother were my first audience. I would create silly characters and they would laugh and laugh - my brother would laugh so hard that he would fall to the floor - which then made my mother laugh even harder. What better encouragement for a budding entertainer?

My brother, Mike, is one of the best men I know. I honestly feel that if you don't like him, something is wrong with you. I know, I'm really fortunate that is how I feel about him - but it also happens to be true. :-) Decent, hardworking, talented and soulful -he is one of my favorite people.

On Friday morning I met this family for a photo session at the Tidal Basin in DC. We are officially in Cherry Blossom Festival time and as this particular family is leaving the area for Texas very soon, they thought it a good idea to incorporate "where" they've spent the past few years in addition to capturing their daughter's one-year-old awesomeness.

We were fighting the elements a bit with some rather frigid "spring" weather, gusty wind and moisture in the air. The flowers, however, were still quite beautiful (It's a pretty neat thing to see if you've never been) and nothing could outshine the most important flower of the day - young Violet - who I believe summoned the sun for the last of our shoot. :-)

I make friends with many military families living in Northern Virginia. I myself grew up with a father in the Air Force and can empathize with so much of all that being a military family encompasses. One thing I never had to deal with was my father's deployment - those were different times.

Last fall I took photographs of their children, but yesterday mom wanted a session with her man, because they will be spending most of the year ahead separated from one another. I am honored she asked me to do it.

The chemistry of these two was so apparent and their joy and comfort in one another - just lovely.

The song "This Little Light of Mine" continues to flow through my thoughts like a mantra - it will not leave my mind. This past week has been filled with profound events in my community and in my life, and someday I may write about it, but not today.

I can tell you that in the moment I am typing this, the sun is striving to break through the clouds and cold, life is a gift and I am filled with affirmation and hope.

So it seems ultimately appropriate that I share a few peeks from my latest session with a six day old baby boy...

I'm posting these "joy of love" photo exercises as of way of holding myself accountable to actually do them. I'm learning an awful lot here. I'll write more about that in the days to come.

then and now...

When I first met Bill in high school, he wore large glasses - now he wears contacts (so you can see those awesome baby blues better), he had the cheesiest peach-fuzz mustache - now he can actually grow a mustache, and he did have a bit more hair in those days. To me though, he has never been more handsome and sexy as he is now.

the little things that annoy you...

Bill caught me taking this picture the other day, and since he knows I'm doing these photo exercises - he guessed right away what the theme of this particular one was...

I mean, come on! push the drawer in ALL the way! :-)

what they wear...

My daughter has been wearing converse since she was a baby. I loved them when I was younger and she loves them too. You can see how "loved" this particular pair are. She wears a pair almost every day to school. (Yes, she has more than one pair)

what they love (besides you)...

In the interest of giving each family member their equal time, and mostly so I don't drive any one of them particularly crazy with my camera all up in their business every day - I thought I would let our dog, Ruby, be my subject.

At 10:30am every day she gets a treat, and her internal clock knows exactly when that is. She receives it in the same spot every day. In fact, when I was out of town a couple of weeks ago and Bill and Sophie were gone all day...the minute Bill walked in the door he expected Ruby would need to go outside - no, she was in her spot waiting...first things first.

It look a bit of effort to get this picture as she was more than a little freaked out at my trying to take a picture of her "special" time and kept running from me. :-)

I am aware of more than a few babies on their way into this world in the next couple of weeks. One of them is a sweet baby boy due the middle of this month.

I recently shot part one of a maternity/newborn session. If there are already children in the household, I like to get a few photos of them before they become a new big sister or brother - because in the coming weeks there will be a lot of attention on the newest member. Here are a few of big sister...

So I'm participating in a month-long exercise/course called "the joy of love" which involves a daily photograph exercise. Yesterday's assignment was to capture an essence/expression/attitude/posture that SCREAMS your loved one.

I asked my daughter to dress in something she thought she looked great in - and then I got her looking in the mirror...

Like all of us, there are many layers to her personality and I also think that this captures another aspect of her...

With all the photographs of children that I take, you think I'd take more of my girl...SO glad I'm doing this.

As I posted previously, last week, I was up in NYC for a quick visit. On Sunday morning, I picked up my camera and headed outside. Before going out, I decided that I would take pictures of whatever drew my eye and this particular morning, I had also decided that I would not take any pictures of people. The temperature was in the teens and I think the windchill brought it to feeling even lower than that, so I only lasted about an hour.

Outside of the temperature, it was a glorious morning in the West Village.

I need to do more of this, not just in the city, but every where that I am - to be present, to really see things and begin to explore different ways of "seeing". This particular morning I was drawn to words, to isolated spots, to texture, to color and "quirk".

I just got back from a quick trip up to New York City. Can't believe I picked the coldest weekend yet to go up there. :-) The main focus was to scope out natural light studio spaces, but I am always invigorated by just being in my hometown. I walked around early Sunday morning and took photographs, which I will post later this week.

Today I wanted to post a picture of one of my favorite subjects - my friend's daughter, Maggie. She looked so adorable in her Army t-shirt, I just had to take a photo of her for her father, who is serving our country in the Mid-East.

This past Saturday, I had the pleasure of going out to the home of Dale, Stephanie, Harrison, Andrew, Noah, Hudson and Buddy the dog. First of all, the house was gorgeous - set back in a neighborhood with big yards and trees and decorated for the holidays. Inside was beautiful too, warm and inviting just like the family that lives in it.

Sunshine Warm Upon Your Face

Last Saturday, Jackie, her husband Rob and her son John left Virginia and moved to Orlando, FL. We had a family photo session a couple of days before they embarked on their journey. Jackie worked at my daughter's school and her son was in my daughter's classroom. It has been a long-time dream for Rob and Jackie to live in Florida, and I'm happy that dream is being realized, but they will be missed.

9 Photographers, 10 Words and Endless Inspiration

This past weekend I went up to Pennsylvania for a reunion/retreat with nine of the ladies from Me Ra Koh's NYC5 Confidence Workshop (that took place last May). Lot's of laughter, catching up, tears and of course...photography.

One of the things we did was take pictures of each other - since we hardly ever get to be in front of the camera ourselves. Here are a few of pics I took of these remarkable women...

This is Monica, a beautiful woman inside and out, she has a soft loveliness that is juxtaposed with an amazing edgy sense of humor and impeccable comedic timing.

Hannah - stunning Hannah. This lady is wise beyond her years. She is full of life and has a HUGE heart for people, words and art. The youngest of us, was often able to articulate what we all were feeling.

Jane - was our hostess for the weekend. The passion, energy and accessibility of this woman is infectious beyond measure. Her home is like her, warm, inviting and full of LOVE.

Marcia (pronounced "Marseeah" :-) She brings so much fun and life to any room, and when she quiets down and grows intense - she is more beautiful than she knows.

Alicia. Gorgeous Alicia. She has an eye for beauty and a passion for the world. She possesses a quiet intensity and she just...glows.

Christine. She is powerful in her directness and "get it done" attitude. The growth that has occurred in her life over the past year is so inspiring to me. She is FIERCE! But I gotta say, it's her softer side that melts my heart.

Gretchen. You take one look at her amazing eyes and you know you are safe. You feel like who you are - is enough. She is gentile and creative and notices incredible details. What a gift.

Last , but not least is the amazing Rachel. She didn't want to get in front of the camera. I wish we had insisted on it now. :-) You will find this beautiful brunette smack dab in the middle on the second row of our group shot below (set up by Christine). Rachel is strong, edgy, innovative and has the gift of "vision". A talented photographer, she took the fun photo I've added to my blog header. :-)

Last Saturday morning, it took me three times as long to get to my photo session. The DC metro area was in full "busy" mode with rallies on the mall and people trying to get to them, accidents on 495 and the usual volume of traffic that "is" this area.

It was certainly worth the wait to have the opportunity to meet Evelyn and her parents. Mom and dad took advantage of the extra time and let Evelyn get a little more beauty sleep (not that she needed it) - and this four month cutie was refreshed and ready to go by the time I got there.

Morning in NYC

One of the nicest things about photo sessions out of town is that there are few distractions, and so I had time to upload and quickly pull some images from my session this morning here in NYC before my afternoon headshot session.

So...this morning I spent a couple of hours with the amazing Liliana and her baby sister Gabriela and their beautiful mom, Charlene. They live close to the park and we couldn't have had better weather...crisp and clean and clear. Gabriela was so sweet and laid back - one of those truly happy babies. Liliana was full of adventure, so smart and pretty and TWO! Once again, it was my pleasure to spend time with and get to know wonderful young spirits.

Last winter, I met a young woman at the hair salon who told me that she was having twins in the fall. I gave her my card and asked her to give me a call when they were born. She called me a couple of weeks ago - the day after giving birth! We got together on Friday to take some pictures. I love newborn sessions - and this one was awesome! Tribute

I had the distinct honor of photographing an amazing event yesterday. I was asked by a family to document a headstone dedication at Quantico National Cemetary for a Vietnam Vet who was also a talented artist, father, husband, brother and so much more.

The traditions of the morning combined with the reverence, respect and intimacy were beautiful and moving.

My mind and my heart were so full as I left the cemetery. For me, it was a profoundly affirming experience. The ability to create something for the family to hold was self-affirming. The stories, prayers and thoughts shared were faith affirming, and the love and strength of this family were life affirming.

Sometimes when I am lost in my stress and momentum, I forget just how sacred life is. I am grateful for the reminder.

Killian Day

A little over a week ago, my family and I travelled to West Shokan, NY to attend Killian Day which was held both to honor the life of Killian Mansfield and to support the foundation he created in the last months of his life.

Killian was truly a remarkable young man. He had a light, a charm and such goodness about him. (I need to give a shout out here to his parents Phil and Barbara who provided the environment, encouragement and support not only for who Killian was, but also for all that he endeavored to do.) The last time that I got to spend time with him, was in August of 2008. He was in DC with his mom and staying at the National Institutes of Health undergoing yet another treatment to fight the Synovial Sarcoma. Because one of Killian's comfort foods was Ethiopian food (I mean come on - what a cool kid!) - we sought out a local Ethiopian restaurant to have dinner. We picked them up (he and Barbara) in front of one of the Smithsonian museums and headed to dinner. Killian had a growth on his chin from the cancer and as he was getting into the car, my five year old daughter took one look at him sitting next to her and said "Mama, I want to go home." Well, needless to say, I was embarrassed and uncomfortable and totally unsure of exactly how to handle the situation...she said it a few more times...I did not know what to do.

Killian, who was fifteen at the time, began gently talking to Sophie (who would not look at him). He asked her questions. He told her that she could ask him whatever she wanted. He kept engaging her. When we got to the restaurant and we were washing out hands, I asked Sophie how she was doing and she said "I'm good. I really like Killian, he's really nice. I don't even notice what's on his face any more." I'm still in awe of the grace with which he handled the whole situation and I'm so grateful for his enormous part in helping to teach my daughter about the true beauty of people.

Last summer I attended his memorial service. The fullness, the eloquence and the profundity of every word spoken about him that day could have belonged to someone who spent much more time on this planet. The magnitude of this kid's effect on people was unbelievable.

So, no surprise at the continued outpouring on the first annual Killian Day.

It has been a while since my last post - so many things have been going on, and I will blog about them SOON. Life has been filled recently with end-of-school-year functions and recital rehearsals and getting summer plans solidified. Ahhhh, the "tender trappings" of parenthood...but I digress...

On Thursday, I went to take photos of the Gunter family. I thought my life was busy, but I've got NOTHIN' on these guys. They are getting ready to make a move from this area to Florida. Troy (Dad) is already down in Florida getting the new house ready for the family. In the midst of moving preparations, Debi (Mom) and her oldest daughter (Claire) took a trip to Africa to bring home the two newest members of the family - Datch and Abby. In addition to the three children already mentioned, the Gunters have two more sons, Landon and Sam (who was also brought home from Africa a few years ago). Needless to say, their household is FILLED with energy and love, lots and lots of love.

I sure wish that we were able to get Dad in this photo session, but schedules just did not permit. Here are a few sneak peeks...

Don't Want To Miss A Thing

I have a really cool job. I ADORE babies and it is always my pleasure to have the opportunity to meet and photograph sweet newborns and to meet their wonderful parents. Yesterday, I met an 11 day old little boy, his parents and his maternal grandparents. The newest member of this family just did not want to miss a thing and he fought sleep with all his little might. The hard life of a supermodel finally took its toll though...zzzzz - so that we could pose him. :-) Here are a few peeks from the session...

I Should've Left An Hour Ago

I called a friend of mine earlier in the week, we have been trying to make a trip to New York happen for some time now. I said "How are you doing? Is this a good time to talk?" - and she said to me..."I should've left an hour ago." I laughed and told her that ought to be the title of a book. It feels like it has been my mantra for the past several weeks.

Life has been CRAZY busy lately, with ALL sorts of things. It is what I have been working for - it is what I asked for and don't get me wrong - I am REALLY glad for it on so many levels. Things kicked into a whole new gear and I'm just experiencing a period of adjustment. How does the song go? "...I can't complain, but sometimes I still do..." Mostly, I'm one grateful lady.

Yesterday, a gorgeous friend let me use her as a model - shooting an adult's portrait. My daughter came into my office as I was transferring the pics from my camera - "That's one pretty lady" she said. Yes, yes she is. Here are a couple of photos from the shoot...

Today I photographed big sister Maggie and her little sister Meredith. Big "M" and little "m". I took Meredith's newborn photos and here we are almost 4 months later. I can't believe how much she has grown and how much of her personality is in full bloom. I've also had the pleasure of taking Maggie's photograph last year while her baby sis was still cookin', and I must say that Maggie has adapted to her new role in the family quite well. One Love

Last week I met another wonderful three generations of women. The grandmother - Vera, and her daughter and granddaughter - both named Latina. The youngest of these women was the subject of my photo shoot.

I had such a great time photographing her.

On Sunday I met Vrett, Nicoele and their first born, Jake. I also had the pleasure of meeting a beautiful black lab named Lilly (the first baby of the family if you were to ask her).

Yesterday I photographed a beautiful little girl named Celia. We were confined to the indoors for this sesssion because of the mounds of snow on the ground outside and it took a few minutes for Celia to warm up, but when she did - oh boy.

Hodge Podge - Catching Up.

In the area where I live, we have been witness to one of the largest snow storms in years this weekend. Some areas of the region were said to have experienced "thunder snow" - a very rare occurence indeed.
"Thunder Snow" - it sounds like the name of a novel doesn't it? Is it?

We spent most of yesterday trying to shovel at intervals so that we wouldn't be digging out of the whole "shabang" today. I have muscles in my back that are not very happy with me - it actually helped to get out again today and do a little more..well, that and a little Advil.

Here's what our street looks like today -

It is a brilliant, bright and sparkly day today. Right after lunch, we headed to the local elementary school with a few of our neighbors for sledding...

I realize as I write this that it has been a while since I have posted anything.

I have begun teaching drama classes at my daughter's school, the first class was this past week, and they have been very well received - both in the number of participants and the exhuberance of the students. I have students that range in age from 4 to 11/12 and I am really excited to be working with them. I know that I will be learning as much from them as they will from me. I'm kinda counting on that.

Finally, I did a newborn photo shoot at the beginning of January. The purpose of the shoot was for a birth announcement photo and so I held off posting preview pictures so that mom, dad and big sister could get the birth announcements out and have the glory of being the very first to present sweet Meredith to the world. The announcements are now out, so here are a few photos from the shoot...

It's like riding a bike...

Over the weekend my daughter decided to take the training wheels off of her bike. It only took a couple of hours for her to get the hang of it, but I'm sure that while they were happening, they felt like two of the longest hours of her little life. She began with much trepidation and every fall was accompanied by some drama - but as she began to gain confidence and her balance, the falls were less and less of a big deal. She actually fell more the better she got at first, but the "taste" of victory was there and so they were only minor "snags". Soon she was riding without falling much at all.

I'm so much more kind and patient with my daughter when she is learning new things than I am with myself. I need to remember (while I'm being tough on myself) that frustration can be part of it and to get right back up and start again.

She is now working on using the brakes while she rides...and that's a whole other lesson for me too. :-)

Onward and Upward!

Shortly after midnight this morning (EST) the 3 recipients of the SOAR! scholarship were revealed. I was not among them.

There are some of you who might not agree with the phrase "It was meant to be" -and I'm not sure that in all circumstances that phrase is applicable - but here I think it is in both the spiritual and practical sense of things for me. I am absolutely certain that the timing of the application process was serendipitous for me. It literally forced me to clarify what I want at this point in my life and "claim" that by putting MY voice to it. Incredibly powerful and meaningful for me.

On top of that, I asked friends and family to view my video application and lend me their support. The comments that people left on the site and in messages to me meant more to me than I can adequately express with words here - and with them came the realization long before the announcement that I had already WON!

So...onward and upward. Other people's gains do not indicate a lack for us. Please come back and check the blog out - become a follower - leave comments. More posts and photos to come!!!

Comfort Zone

This morning I took a spin class at the gym. With the holidays and all, it has been a while since I've stepped foot inside the gym - or as a good friend of mine likes to say when it has been some time since he worked out - "The gym has been closed for renovations." The instructor started off by telling us that we needed to push past our comfort zone in order to get a good workout.

Well, we've all heard that before right? I mean in one form or another - push past your comfort zones, think "outside of the box", etc...and I have accomplished both of those things in spurts and glimpses and moments in my life - but I've yet to accomplish sustaining them for myself on any life changing level. I love a good motivational quote or an uplifting article or book - and I am the all time sucker for old movies where everything turns out "just right" in the end. I'm a dreamer and an optimist and a fabulous cheerleader for people and causes that I believe in...but what I'm finally putting out there is that I haven't done the best job, in my adult life, of being those things for me.

No matter the outcome of the scholarship that I applied for, It's time to do something about that.

Mama Bliss

Right before Christmas I went to visit with my friend Allison and the newest member of her family - sweet Emma. Allison answered the door holding the sleeping girl and it was obvious at first glance how content and happy she was. I have to say, I'm so envious of all my friends who have had that experience right after giving birth.

I gotta say - Emma was pretty calm herself and fairly laid back even in the midst of my picture taking and being undressed all in the name of capturing her newborn yumminess. I'm thinking this is a personality trait that will continue- just another reason for this family to count their blessings.

Already a true beauty

A New Path!

When I started this blog back in April, it was for the purpose of showing sneak peeks of my photo shoots as I was building my portfolio. I'm still going to do that, but something (and a lot of someones!) have inspired me to do more...

Okay - so over the weekend, I went beyond my comfort zone and applied for a scholarship with SOAR! for an awesome opportunity to grow and expand my photography business. In order to complete the application you had to submit a video. Now, those of you who know my acting background may think that wouldn't be hard for me...but it was! SCARY hard! First - I had only a few days to complete it (The deadline was Dec. 21st and I found out about it on Dec. 16), Second - I had no idea how to make/edit a video and upload/send it and finally - I had to speak in the video and share something of myself - EEEK!

Well, I got the application and video in before the deadline...was it perfect? - no - but I did it! As of today, there are over 200 videos sumitted. I've watched many of the videos (and I plan to honor everyone by watching all of them)...these women are creative, funny, genuine and out and out AMAZING! and they have inspired me to go out on a limb in the coming year (no matter the outcome of the scholarship competition) and put myself out there.

So this blog will now be a place to document my journey as an artist, a photographer, a wife, a mom and a human being making my way in this world. I know this is crucial to the overall success of my life. It feels vulnerable and exposed and a bit awkward - but I'm ready.
